Peugeot . How to Replace a Coil Spring in a Chevy ImpalaYour Chevy Impala has strut assemblies in the front suspension that contain coil springs. These steps will guide you through replacing the coil springs on a Chevy Impala strut assembly by using a vise-type spring compressor tool, but the same results could be accomplished using a separate vise and spring compressor. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Safety stands Ratchet set Spring compression tool Guiding rod Step by Step : 1 Raise and safely support your Chevy Impala, then remove the wheel(s) nearest the strut(s) you intend to replace and remove the strut(s). 2 Mount the strut assembly into a strut/spring compressor tool. If the tool you're using does not securely clamp to a stable surface, you must also secure the strut in a vise before proceeding. 3 Compress the spring approximately half its height; never bottom out the spring or the shock absorber. Next, remove the nut from the damper (shock absorber) shaft and, using a guide rod, push the damper shaft straight down through the spring cap and remove the strut components. Lay them out in the order and orientation they were removed to make reassembly easier. 4 Decompress the old spring slowly, carefully and evenly. Place the new spring into the strut/spring compressor and compress it evenly to about half its original height. 5 Place the damper through the spring. Depending on which spring compressor tool you are using you may need to perform this before Step 4, and secure one or both ends of the damper in the compressor tool or a vise to keep it stable. 6 Reinstall the strut components with the spring still compressed. Tighten the front strut nut to 63 foot pounds of torque and the rear strut nut to 55 foot pounds. Then carefully decompress the spring component of the strut. 7 Install the overhauled strut to your Chevy Impala, reinstall the wheels and tighten the lug nuts, then lower your Chevy Impala to the ground. Tips & Warnings It may be helpful to make a straight line of paint down the strut components; this will help to ensure they are properly lined up when you reassemble the strut. Peugeot . How to Replace a Coil Spring in a Ford FocusYour Ford Focus has coil springs in the rear suspension. In order to replace them, you need a special spring compressor tool and adapters along with safety stands and a ratchet set. These steps apply to all model years of the Ford Focus except for the 2005 wagon. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Safety stands Spring compressor 204-167 Spring compressor adapters 204-215 Ratchet set Step by Step : 1 Raise your Ford Focus and support it with safety stands. Take careful note of how the spring you're about to replace is oriented. 2 Place the spring compressor 204-167 with adapters 204-215 on the spring, compress the coil spring evenly and securely, then remove it (still compressed) from the vehicle. 3 Decompress the old spring slowly, evenly and carefully. If at any point you are unsure of how to do this, stop and consult your spring compressor documentation or a competent mechanic. 4 Compress the new spring slowly and carefully, then install it into your Ford Focus. Make sure that it's oriented as the old spring was. Be careful when decompressing the new spring, and continue checking to make sure that it is properly oriented throughout the decompression process. 5 Lower your Ford Focus to the ground and test drive it to check the new spring performance. Tips & Warnings Always use safety stands; never work underneath a vehicle supported by a jack. Be very careful when compressing and decompressing automotive springs; they store a lot of energy. Never try to compress, install or remove automotive springs without the proper spring compression tool. *Clue Culprit Remedy Whining, thumping, Poor alignment, worn Have wheels aligned or buy and other weird noises tires or shocks new tires or shocks Squealing on curves Poor alignment Check wear on treads and act or underinflation accordingly Figure 19-8: What the signs of poor tread wear mean. Severe underinflation Overinflation Poor alignment Poor alignment Underinflated tires wear out faster, create excessive heat, increase fuel consumption, and make your car harder to handle. Overinflated tires can "blow out" more easily, wear out faster, and make the car unstable and unsafe to handle. And a new set of tires on wheels that are out of alignment can wear out completely in as little as one day of hard driving! 916

Remove them. But if you're going to remove a nail, first make sure that your spare tire is inflated and in usable shape. If you hear a hissing sound when you pull a nail, push the nail back in quickly and take the tire to be fixed. If you aren't sure whether air is escaping, put some soapy water on the hole and look for the bubbles made by escaping air. If you're still not sure whether the nail may have caused a leak, check your air pressure and then check it again the next day to see whether it's lower (for help, see "Checking your air pressure," earlier in this chapter). Tires with leaks should be patched by a professional. If the leak persists, get a new tire. Figure 19-9: It's time for new tires when tread-wear indicators appear. .Chapter 19: Checking Your Tires, Alignment, and Steering A / 7 Look at the sidewalls. Check for deeply scuffed or worn areas, bulges or bubbles, small slits, or holes. Do the tires fit evenly and snugly around the wheel rims? Look at the treads. Most tires have tread-wear indicators built into them (see Figure 19-9). These bars of hard rubber are normally invisible but appear across treads that have been worn down to Xe of an inch of the surface of the tire (the legal limit in most states). If these indicators appear in two or three different places, less than 120 degrees apart on the circumference of the tire, replace the tire. If your tires don't show these indicators and you think that they may be worn below legal tolerances, place a Lincoln penny head-down in the groove between the treads. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, your tire probably heeds to be replaced. To measure tread wear more exactly, place a thin ruler into the tread and measure the distance from the base of the tread to the surface. It should be more than Yw inch deep. (Note: If your front tires are more worn than your rear ones and show abnormal wear patterns, you probably need to have your wheels aligned.) Peugeot . How can you sue after a reposession in the state of florida?
Isuzu Amigo. * Pay attention to leaks. If you keep losing air in your tires, have your local service station check them for leaks. Sometimes an ill-fitting rim causes a leak. The garage has a machine that can fix this problem easily. If the garage can't find a leak, your rims fit properly, and you're still losing air, you probably have a faulty tire valve that's allowing air to escape. You can buy tire valves to replace the ones on your car. Look for the number molded into the base of the tire valves; then buy new ones that match it. Part III: Keeping Your Car in Good Condition, System by System In the process of replacing the valve, you will lose most of the air from the tire, so either plan to do this job at a gas station where you can have access to an air hose, or have a mechanic replace the valve for you.
